Hey guys, what's the best brand of pool filter sand you guys would recommend and also what would you say is the best method for rinsing it effectively? I've never done a sand bottom i've always had gravel before so i'm not really sure what to expect, i've just heard the sand is easier to vacuum because the waste stays on top

Sand is so much better than gravel. Any kind of pool filter sand will work (at least I'm not aware of any that won't). My method of rinsing the sand is to fill my bucket about halfway. The bucket I use has a spout on one side so I just have the spout facing downhill, put a hose in the bucket and stir the sand til it rinses clear, then dump in the tank. IT's really that simple.

I got some at Leslie's Pool Supply. they're a national chain, so might have one near you. Or just about any pool supply store. Lowes and Home Depot sometimes carry it too I guess, but not the ones in my area. Don't know any brands, but it was only around $12 for 50 pounds, natural color (sometimes can find white).

Washing took a while. Just get ya a 5 gallon bucket, Fill it about 1/3 with sand and turn on the hose. Fill the bucket with water, stir a lot, dump the dirty water out. Repeat the water Fill/Stir/Dump cycle until the water you are dumping out is clear. Then add the sand to the tank and start the next bucket.

Sure it was pool filter sand and not playground sand? There's a difference in grain size.

Playground sand is a little bigger grained. Not a huge difference, but it's noticable if you hold them side by side. Also not necessarily a bad thing, just something to be aware of.

I'm pretty sure he got pool filter sand. PlaySand from Home Depot is $2-$3.
