Pool filter sand?

You can go to any pool store and get a 50lbs bag for around $10. That will fill a 5gal bucket 95%. Stick a hose in the bottom and let it run for 10-15, every couple of minutes mover the hose. It's inert, easy to maintian, looks great and the fish love it. Don't get black blasting sand, that's usually iron slag, rough on the fish and the glass.

I bought pool filter sand from my local pool supply store. It was a breeze to clean. In fact it was so clean I barely needed to do more than rinse it. I love the way it looks and it settles really quick should one of the fish stir it up. I highly recommend it.

I used red flint pfs. The thing is to get the biggest granuals you can. They do grade the sand.

My sand came pre-washed but I washed it anyway, was very glad I did, I got a lot of "stuff" out of it.

I used Leslie's brand PFS, but from my understanding, as long as it comes from a Pool Supply Store, and is labeled as use for Pool Filter Sand it is the same, just sometimes you'll get a different 'shade' to it.

I took 2 5gal buckets, filled each up a little over half way, stuck a small piece of wood under one of each bottom corner so it was on an angle and shoved a hose in. Swished it around by hand a couple times, then dumped the top water out and repeat. I did that 10-15 times per bucket, then let the hose run in each shoved down in the bottom for about 10 min each and was done.

When you put the sand in the tank, let it sit for a few hours and settle before turning on your filtration, otherwise there's a very good chance the sand will get sucked up and destroy your motor. I let mine sit for about 2 hours, turned on the filter, and within another 2 hours it was clear.

You won't get a more fool proof explanation that this. I follow an almost identical procedure, just use bigger containers.

I agree, Leslies is probably one of the best to use. It's so clean I just dump it in my tank and after a while just net all the leftover floaters. Wouldn't recommend doing that with fish in the tank though.
