Hi,
Im going to be rinsing a large quantity of pool filter sand to use for a substate, I know its not as messy as regular hardware store sand, but id still like to give it a nice wash before adding it.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to efficiently do this? If I put holes in a bucket or wash it through a fine net I will lose a lot of sand, and my drain will likely hold a grudge.

Thank you for your help

I pour it into a bucket about 3/4's of the way full. I bury the tip of the hose near the bottom and turn the water on decent flow. I mix it with my hand a little and let the water flow over the rim of the bucket for a few minutes...mixing by hand every so often. After that, I dump it into the tank.

Do it outside in buckets. Fill buckets up halfway with sand and then run a hose continously while sturring the sand. The debri will flow out and over the top of the bucket. That's how I did it

+1 on both the previous comments. Up in Boston this time of year, the "inside suggestion" (mrrobxc) is likely most appropriate. I know if I did mine outside right now where I'm located, my hand would likely freeze solid in the bucket in seconds (colder than Mars:uhoh:)

I agree with Jim, bit too cold here for outside now.
When I'm simply doing water changes (not vacuuming), I siphon tank water into a bucket of sand, stir and dump for the entire duration of the water changes or until the sand rinses clear.
Also before doing water changes, I need to adjust for temp.
I always have a small bucket of sand under the tap, so some sand is constantly being rinsed during every water change.

Haha forgive my ignorance I live in Vegas although born in Philadelphia. I have forgotten what bad weather means :)

When I got my PFS from Leslie's I tried rinsing it but everything just sank with no cloudy water.....so I basically dumped the sand in, all my tanks have the same sand.....one of the easiest sand to clean as compAred to play sand

I just rinsed 100lbs of PFS in the laundry tub when no one was looking. I filled 5g pail half full, ran the tap into the bucket and then stirred by hand vigorously. Poured the dirty water off 3-4 times making sure to not get any sand at all in the sink :irked:
put it in the tank then repeated the process until it was all done. Mebbe took an hour or so.
