can it be done? this summer i would like to make a big outdoor pond, but with the size i want to make it, buying a liner would be crazy expensive. i was looking on ebay and found some pool liners that arent a bad price, but im wondering if they would be any good, and mainly, do you guys thing their fish safe? this is the kind of liner im referring too, http://cgi.ebay.com/12x20-Blue-Abov...210?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5197a0323a

I'm confused, thats 12'x20' feet and $175

why not get actual pond liner that is 15'x20' and also $175 http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=5163+5181+9213&pcatid=9213

sorry that didn't answer your question.

On the link you posted it says "100% virgin vinyl that is formulated to last year after year thanks to a clear protective coating that protects the liners from sun, chemicals, bacteria, fungus, and algae."

i don't trust something thats anti-fungus, anti-bacteria, and anti-algae.. i bet its not safe. if this coating was safe they'd use it in actual pond liners because i know vinyl liners are usually pretty susceptible to u.v. and that's one downside of vinyl

No,pool liner is too thin and not made for that kind of use.Would it work for a season or 2?maybe but roots etc will go right through it,rocks etc. That's why pool liners have metal walls to sit against(pool itself) and sand 4" deep on the bottom.Right now you should be able to get a great deal on a liner though. It's out of season.
Unless, you lined the whole thing with carpet to keep stuff from poking it but i still wouldn't advise it.

I wouldn't do it... The pond liner I bought is nearly indestructable. Trying to cut through it with a new blade in my utility knife was a chore. Pool liners are so much thinner than these 45 mil pond liners that I know they would tear much too easily. Rocks, roots, etc would all be a problem. Even stepping into the pond to do work in it (filter maintenance, cleaning, etc) would all be hazardous to the liner...

Having done landscaping and property maintinence, if you plan on keeping fish in your pond don't half @$$ it, spend the money buy a pond liner it will be there for a couple decades, the pool liner will last one or two seasons if your lucky then you'll loose all your beloved koi.

If you had the pool liner laying around or was given to you for free, maybe.

Since you are buying it, go with EPDM that will last years and years. The price will only be slightly more, maybe even less if you get a deal at a local garden center or nursery.
