A friend of mine is giving away a above ground pool. Its 15-20 across and 4 feet deep. He also told me that it has a special liner that can "stretch" and be up to 6 feet deep. He paid $3,000 for it two years ago. He never gets to use it so he said I could have it. I would love to use it as a pond but I live in nebraska and it gets pretty cold. Would there be anyway to have it heated in the winter to keep fish? I know pond stores here keep their Koi alive year round. Would it that much harder to keep some cichlids and cats or maybe a school of pacu? If its possible then I would like to build a wrap around deck off my house. Thanks

You should dig it inground to get the insulation from the ground to keep fish alive through the winter. Still you need covering or aeration to keep a hole in the ice for the fish not to suffocate.
You can have Koi and other hardy fish, but I think you can forget about tropical fish.

If you do this I think it will work out OK.

You'll have to be careful taking it down, some parts of the liner could have hardened.

See what his liner guarantee was, some are 10 years, so it's not a bad deal.

Video tape the demolition, I mean disassembly.

If you install it leave enough space around the outside to burm dirt up around the pool after it is filled. This will insulate the water and hold in the heat from the heater.

Good time to try some solar heating too. Used pool heating solar panels or a bunch of 1/2 inch pvc pipe painted flat black with a valve to bypass it at night or during cloudy days.

Pitch a cover to keep out snow and too much sun in summer.

You could always make it a summer pond and an ice rink in the winter. :WHOA:

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Yea I got the pool/pond I just need to find time to go and disassemble it and put it in my storage until spring next year. By then it will give me time to move into my new house that is located on 2 acres. Hum... 2 acre lot... Im thinking of a really big pond like 200,000gallons or bigger! :)
