Hi Everyone,

I have aquired a large pool sand filter and two pumps to suit from a cooling tower.

I was thinking about plumbing all of my large tanks through this filter, just wondering if anyone has ever used them before, pros, cons etc.

Also, what is the best way to sanitize these? ie- replacing the sand? etc

I'm hoping to get a few oppinions as I'm currently running an army of time consuming FX5's :nilly:

Thanks!

How big is it? What size pump? I know they work great for Koi ponds. My buddy has a large one on his Koi pond and his gardener just back flushes it for 15-20 minutes a month. Do you have a picture of it? Make and model # ?

I haven't got all the details yet, my father should be bringing it home tomorrow, I do know the pumps are enormous, they're up in the garage at the moment. They are Onga Pantera 550's, the manufacturer states they do 227 Litres per Minute at a 3.0m Head.

The problem you are going to have with that filter is when it comes time to backwash it (cleaning it). It is going to take a tremendous amount of water and will require at least one of those pumps. During the backwash, all of the water will go to sewer.

When you say backwash, just to clarify, does that affect the level of the water in the tank? I've never used one of these before so I have absolutely no idea what the process is!

Draining is no problem, I do with with my FX5's, the tanks are plumbed up to a pipe that I plug the hose into to water the garden. I probably would need to make it bigger to accomodate the water volume.

When you backwash the filter, the sand filter uses the tank water to clean all the crud out. Then when the backwash is done you put it to rinse and same thing, just cleans out anything floating in the filter. So yes it would lower your water level by quite a bit. Just a excuse for another water change!
