I called my local pool store and the filter sand they carry is Silica Sand Grade 20. Is this what you guys use? Is it safe for my rays?

I would stay away from silica it is used for sand blasting so it usually has sharp edges. I have a 120 gallon with aquarium gravel the river rock type one side small one side large. My retic can hide under the small gravel and can move or cover with a bit of lrge stone. He has no scrapes or sores. Just try to get something smooth. I think my next tank will have nothing.
all sand has/is sillica.... now 20grade i believe would be equal to a 00 sand and that would be fine....
ive got play sand in mine and it looks great. my jurapari sifts through it with no problem. it does suck to clean it though.
I have had no problem with play sand with the exception that some plants can't root well in it because it compacts.
