I just bought a 720 gallon tank. The next thing is filtration. I am by no means well-versed in filtration.

The LFS just shut down a central system with two 60 gallon sumps and one big 1/2 HP Pool/Spa pump. He offered it to me for $75.00. Would you do it?

In a heartbeat I'd take it. My Reeflo Hammerhead pump is 1/3 HP and sells for about $350.00. We have extreme mechanical filtration with two spa filters run with the Hammerhead pump on our 300 gallon tank. We have great biological filtration with a ProClear wet/dry filter (400 gallon capacity). Here's a post on our filtration system

You should find out how loud that pump is. It wouldn't matter if you had a separate filter room, but if all your filters are going under the stand, then there might be a "loudness" factor. Our pump is very quiet, but my husband put the pump in a large metal pan that sits on the hardwood floor--we have a lot of buzz from the vibration of the metal pan on the floor.

You are awesome Pacu Mom!

Thanks for the reply. I got the filtration unit but I am a bit tentative about it. Reason being mainly the pump. I'm not sure how long the pump will hold up considering that it was made for a pool and pool pumps only run 12 hours max daily.

Correct me if I am wrong but maybe I will just use it until it burns out. For $75, it was a deal.

what kind of pump is it? If the LFS has been using it I wouldn't be afraid of it. If it's centrifugal it shouldn't matter as long as you keep air around it..

either way it sounds like you got a deal!

The brand is Advantage Manufacturing Inc:confused:

Most pool pumps are built for continuous use. The exceptions are what you would find at Walmart or "cheapo depots".

I called the maker and they assured me that I would have MORE THAN ENOUGH GPH for my application.

Anyone know where to get cheap bio-media from (balls or ceramic)? Ebay?

Did they give you any specs? My first thought was that it would flow too much. If the lfs's system was comparable to yours gallon wise, then there won't be a problem.

And like Rallysman said, Zenzzo just bought several cases of scrubbies for cheap. He now needs to get rid of the extras. Help a fellow MFKer out. You won't find them anywhere cheaper.
