Hey all. Picked up a big fish from a guy a couple months ago. I put the fish in a bare bottom setup. 2 months later it is passing gravel. No gravel for 2 months, then all of a sudden a teaspoon worth. Anyone think I should try to purge the fish with epson? I'm wondering how much is in his belly, and if it's good to have the stones. Anyone have experience in the fish **** catagory? thanks.

eek! Bump- as i want to see this fish get help.

If hes passin the stones i would take them out after he passes them.
Maybe use larger stones for his deco. or sand.

Pictures??

I would generally think this is un-healthy, but i dont know much.

Do not try to remove them out his belly. Or anything like that.

GL, get us some pictures!

Many fish and fowl will ingest stones in order to aid in digestion, in the case of a fish possibly for ballast as well.

I would not be concerned unless the sub-straight is synthetic and/or leaching some noxious chemical, odds are if the fish is still alive after 2-3 months then this is a non issue, in fact you may consider giving the guy more stuff (gravel etc) as he my be craving it!

Please if any of the gurus know better, feel free to correct anything I have said. I have been out of touch for a while.

Interesting and also very possible!

Birds definitely ingest gravel to aid in digestion, but they have a digestive organ (crop or gizzard) specifically for this purpose. I have never heard of a fish doing this before, though. What species of fish is it?

ive seen my bigger fish do this, expecially goldfish. however, its generally just a few stones, not a whole teaspoons worth like you said.

but yes, its fairly normal for large fish to ingest a rock or two, or some sand form their substrate.

it is a piranha. about 15 stones at once, and not one 2 months prior. Did it take that long for them to go through his system? Or were they stuck somewhere? Who knows. Thanks.

if there hasent been any stones for 2 months, i may be inclined to think they were caught up somewhere.

from this, i would say its not a good idea to keep anymore rocks or sand or anything in the tank, as the fish is lucky he was able to finally pass so many, and may not fare as well next time.
