Poor Fish!! Anyone willing to rescue?

Thats exactly why I wish they would quit selling these fish at petsmart and other big chain stores. Leave the option for special order for the people who know what they are doing. My first pacu got to be 15in. in my 55g. When he was no longer able to even turn him around and to give him up to a better home. Now i know my limits and a pacu is way past them. To bad those are beautiful fish.

ya it really sucks if it was in india i would have taken it no doubt

Totally agree!

There's a Pacu at a LFS near me that has got to be 10 pounds that they can't even GIVE away! Most Pacus are destined for a slow, prolonged death by environment.

I have noticed lately that my LFS and Walmart have not had them in stock, I don't know if it is due to a shortage. or if they have come to their senses.

I still find myself look at the "cute" little 2-3" inch pacu and wanting to take one home. I then snap back to reality and remember the space and requirments to care for them properly.

Once I get my own place I have already convinced my gf to allow me to set up a 12' intek pool like a fellow MFK'er has done so I can keep this species.

I can't imagine how often that tank must be cleaned just to keep them alive, a larger Pacu and Oscar in a 55 is quite the bioload. They both are fairly hardy but I'll bet that Oscar's head is pitted from HITH.

I feel like these are the two fish this happens to the most, people always want pacu because they want big fish to show off, but not always have big tanks. People also always want a big, mean cichlid like an Oscar that grows fast, but again, don't have the tank size. Combined with the fact that both species are readily available. Pacu's in 55 gallons, Oscars in 10 Gallons isn't an uncommon sight outside of experienced fish keepers.

My LFS has a larger 100 gallon holding tank they keep just 1 Pacu in to show how big they get before they will sell any Pacu to anyone.

That si terrible
I WISH that people wouold research the type of fish that they "think" they want and know what to expectbefore it is a situation like that poor fish

Thats why when i see all these threads about getting a particular fish that grows large and all they have is a 29 gallon or a 55 gallon tank BUT they are getting a larger tank in only a matter of months i get irratated. Just wait till you get the tank then buy the fish. Sorry for ranting but its just irresponsible. I know my limits and when i was younger I made a few mistakes so i hate to see others make those same mistakes. That Pacu just really breaks my heart.
