Nope.. These can come from either a male or female ray..

Is it a dermal denticle from a constellata ray?

DING DING DING, WE HAVE A WINNER.. well half a winner..
it is a Dermal Dentical, just not from a Constellata ray.

This came from my female Motoro Ray.
Most know that from time to time, a ray will get a spike on its disk. Some more than others.
Well my female Motoro has had one on the back area of her disk for a long while now. Not a big deal.
But last week, my male Motoro wanted some. :) So he was trying to do his thing. And during that time, of course messed up my female's disk while biting on her. He damaged the skin that was covering her denticle.. Next things I knew, a few days later i could see it coming off and in the sand bed.
Its kinda hard, but more like calcium build up than bone.
Kinda cool to see what is under the skin were those spikes on the disk are on rays..

Very cool, i know motoros are often called thorny river rays but i remembered seeing a constellata carcass in the aqualog that showed those in abundance all over it. Figured id give it a shot. I keep the barbs that my Orb ray sheds in a test tube, you keeping that? I would, it's a great conversation piece to say the least.

Yes, Im keeping it.. I think its kinda cool. And I do the same thing, I keep all the barbs from all my rays.. Each ray has its own cup that their barbs are in after they shed them.

was gonna say denticle but only just noticed this thread haha.
my rays only have tail spines, nothing on their discs, since i don't keep motoros.
it's interesting to see what comes from rays, as most of us keep the shed barbs too.
hopefully something good will come out of his friskiness!
