In the 125 I have an adult male convict and I noticed this morning that its eye is slightly protruding and it has a gash over its eye as well. it also has a piece of flesh hanging from its lower jaw. It has been quarreling with a female dempsey all week, so it looks from all indications that it was roughed up. Today I fed, and it was still eating and otherwise acting normal. My question is whether I should add some sort of med, other than salt. Other than water changes, anything else anyone has done for this problem. in case it is asked, ammonia is 0, nitrite is 0.

Your best defense at this point is clean water. Salt is optional but I do not use it for injuries. I simply stick to water changes and improved nutritional diet as a way to allow the fish to recover from injuries.

thanks for the reply, a quick update: the mouth injury is looking a lot better, as the dangling piece has either fallen off or healed. As for the eye, it looks about the same, which means not worse, which is good news.

Glad your fish is improving although I wish the eye would have at least improved by now but it's better the same than anything else worse.

update once again, the eye is looking a lot better today, which I assume means it was just due to an injury from its fights with the dempsey.
