Came home today and saw my female Managuense had a bulging eye. I know the basics of Popeye, fluid build up causes it, can be eye damage or bacterial infection related..

Tank: 125g 81 degrees, ammonia/ nirites/nitrates are all fine

Water changes 20% every other day.

I already treated with Epsom salts.

Just looking for additional suggestions from people with experience.

Additional info: her eye is not cloudy and there are no other injuries. I have noticed her acting slightly different, hanging toward the top areas of the tank instead of lower levels like normal. Also, she’s been holding eggs for over a week, which I’m sure are bad now.

I know with the chance of bacterial issues, medication may be needed. What is “best” and where is a common place to get some?

Thomas labs makes great meds for fish..put hear in quarantine tank also..thomas labs saved a couple my fish..chewy .com. 1 to 2 day delievery..not expensive

Day 2, less than 24 hours after discovery it’s significantly worse. Eye is out more, cloudiness, and area around the eye is popping.

This is looking bad. Really bad

Add salt 1 tsp per gallon and get some maracyn2.

Bought the meds and am treating her in the hospital tank. Now I’m just worried about ammonia, since the meds will likely screw up the nitrogen cycle. I’ve also noticed puss stringing off of the hole above her eye. This stuff progresses so fast. First signs were literally 10 min prior to first post

Hope it’s not too late!

Yes keep an eye on the water. Test daily.

Erythromycin is the first thing to try for eye infections. One of the Maracyns contains it, I believe.

She’s getting Erythromycin as a treatment and I’m following the package instructions. Water in hospital tank is pretty cloudy though so it’s hard not to just do a water change. No improvement 24 hours later. Eye is still clouded with an open sore above it that is excreting the puss. Every time I look at it it looks bigger but I can’t tell if it’s just me. She can’t see out of it at all, which probably will never be regained. If the treatment doesn’t work the only thing I can think of doing is either remove the eye by doing a surgery I’ve only seen on YouTube with a goldfish or euthanize. I haven’t tried to feed her. She is still acting “off” but I’m sure I would be too if there was that much pressure/fluid buildup. She still greets me when I approach her and doesn’t appear to be having any swimming issues.

Antibiotics aren't going to work that fast. How many gallons is the hospital tank?
