It's been a long week without power or running water spent away from my house. I went through a lot of hassle to make sure my 14" Oscar didn't die by bringing it on a 5 hour one way drive in a plastic tub and doing daily water changes while away, but fully expected to come home today and find all of my other fish dead. Surprisingly almost all of them survived. I'm exhausted and tried searching but couldn't find any answers so if someone could please help me without giving the "try the search feature" run around I'd appreciate it. I'm looking for the clearance required from the back of the tank to wall for the following popular HOB filters:

Emperor 400
Penguin 350
AC110
AC70

Also if anyone has any recommendations to add to the list, I'm looking for something I can use mainly for mechanical filtration to help out the two Eheim 2028s I have powering my 125g. Thanks in advance.

The Emperor 400 needs at least 4.3" and both AC's at least 4".

I intentionally left 5" behind my tanks for the possibility of adding any power filters to my tanks. It allows enough room for equipment add ons and makes it easier to remove and replace equipment without scraping the wall or your knuckles.

If your worried about space then a sponge filter is the way to go

got any suggestions?

thanks for all the replies guys, looks like an HOB is out of the question for me because I only left a little over 3" of space. i may just have to replace the two 2028s with an FX5. i don't understand why the 2 eheims aren't cutting it, i only have a 14" oscar, 7" L001, 4 bolivian rams, and 15 lemon tetras in a 125g tank so it is not overstocked by any means. bio is never a problem but they don't do a great job of mech filtration.

Have you thought about draining most of the water out of the tank and moving the tank/stand away from the wall a few more inches to accomodate a couple of power filters?

I've done it with my 75G and 125G tanks without any problems. You won't need to pick the tank/stand up, just slide it forward a bit. I used a piece of scrap plywood against the wall and a length of 2x4 to pry it forward.

i have glass canopies so that wouldn't work. there are plastic strips in the back that can be cut to fit HOB filters, tubing, etc...

actually, it will. you just need to cut the top (or buy a piece that will fit(HD will cut it for you)) and get a plastic side support to sit the glass on. I did a river tank that way many moons ago.

i thought about it but the tank is on carpet and i'm not sure how possible this would be. i might give it a shot as a last resort.
