I had some extra 30ppi foam and cut it to fit in my ac110, i wanted to swap it for the floss but it seems that the foam was too dense and the water wasnt flowing through instead around it. And from the chamber that houses the intake tube.

Which is better for mech the floss or the foam

I am a big fan of floss. I use the super cheap pillow stuffing material. Allows a ton of flow, yet catches nearly everything. Best part is, you just throw it out instead of spending time wringing it out like foam. Due to the poorer porosity of foam, it also allows a lot of pass through/around

Both will provide mechanical filtration but as you have seen, the 30ppm Poret will clog quicker because the pores are closer together and plug up quicker.

I use the stock AC110 foam, a blue/white bonded sheet and some loose fitting scrap pieces of 20PPI Poret left over from cutting pads for my Eheim 2260/62 filters.

Floss is the bomb. I use it in everything possible for mech media.

And like stated earlier. It's cheap and can just be discarded like trash to the curb.

Also I like bonded poly pads that come in rolls. Cut to fit.

For what you are doing, floss is better. If you had some 10 PPI foam that would be best.

Thanks guys...
Rodger i do have 10ppi but wanted to use the finer foam to trap smaller particals.

You can cut poly pad, or cheaper poly batting from fabric shop, and wrap around the foam to force water through and not around the foam. Good mechanical filtration requires fine pores to trap fines and good seal around the edges to prevent by pass. This is why I prefer conventional HOBs like Penquin or Whisper over AC that do not allow leakakge around the edges.

As the 10 ppi foam gets dirty, it traps smaller and smaller particles. Until you reach impass, and the whole thing moves up and knocks your lid off, so you know it is time to clean.
