I was thinking about buying a snake, and I've been doing my research and was leaning towards getting a corn snake, because they seem to be everyones recommendation for a first snake.

Basically what I was wondering is:

A. What size enclosure do I need for a corn snake. As of now I have a spare standard 10g tank (20.0 x 11.0 x 12.0) and a standard 55g tank (48 x 12½ x 21) are eithers of these sufficiant?

B. What equipment would I need? Links would be good to help me know what I have to get.

Any help is much appreciated!

Ok corn snakes are very simple.... it would be best to start it in your ten gallon and all you will need is a couple places to hide (the more the better) a heating pad on one side and a water dish really. Make sure your top is snug though they can be sneaky. And in the future that 55 would make a great home.

I would say start with a 20 long (but a 10gal will work in a pinch) as a grow out tank and then when it is full grown a 55.

You will need a water bowl that is big enough to allow the snake to submerge and is heavy enough to not be tipped over. Ceramic dog bowls work great and are cheap but if you want, naturalistic water bowls are available but a bit more expensive.

You will also need a heat source. I prefer to use heat lamps because they allow you to see in the enclosure better and allow the snake to soak up more heat when needed and burrow to avoid the heat if it gets too hot. Think about it, only 20% of the snake is touching the ground compared to the rest of the snake facing the "sun" so I really think that heat lamps are more effective than heating pads.

Good luck and keep us posted, there are tons of great caresheets for something like a corn snake so start with google and read as many as you can to get a few different opinions and to weed out the bad information.

Alright thanks guys. I'll look into a 20 long see if I can get a good deal somewhere, and what type of heat lamp are you talking about snakeguy?

just the regular dome ones. You can get the nice ceramic ones at any pet store but you can also get the cheap ones that still work fine at a hardware store.

IMO a fully grown corn snake can do fine in a 3', 30g tank, but if you have an empty 55g the extra space can't hurt.

I agree but I have noticed that 55gals are actually less expensive since they are a more common size. but you are right, a 30gal would be good.
