I just had an idea come to me. Has anyone made a simple filter that would perform only the mechanical filtration. The type of thing that I am picturing is simply a pump pushing water through some pvc or tubing that then dumps the water into a filter sock then back into the tank? Any input?

I'm sure it would work but if I'm already moving water I want biological filtration as well :) For the low cost of scrubbies I wouldn't run a pump without mechanical and bio :)

Agree. But i guess i you were SUPER pressed for space you could make a "mini sump" out of a 5 gallon bucket with just a filter sock....

Running with a 20 micron filter cartridge.

We have extreme mechanical filtration using two spa filters run by a Hammerhead pump. In our bare floor 300 gallon tank, besides the main uptake, we have two "poop suckers"--PVC pipe 1/4" from the floor that picks up all debris on the floor. In the nearly five years the tank has been running, there was never been any debris to vacuum out.

We like the spa filters so well, on our big system we're going with four large spa filters run by two Hammerhead pumps. There will be six uptakes, four of which will be poop suckers. We're going to do all the other things--prefilter sponge in the overflow box, filter sock in the holding sump, two Ultima filters--but I'm counting on my spa filters to do the heavy duty mechanical filtration. I love spa filters.
