One of my buddies just bought me about 25 small guppies. Well on about 6 of them they seem to have like white pimples on their lips, eye's and some other areas of their bodies. Do you think this is Ich? I've never had ich before. The tank they are in is a 20 gallon feeder tank for my piranha. Question, will all these fish be a potential threat to my P's? The feeder tank has a bear bottom which i understand is probably a good thing. What is the best precaution to take and please help me with a diagnosis. Thanks

QT them with salt and heat for 2 weeks, see if it gets better.

If it doesn't, it's a parasite.

Ich looks like salt.. 'pimples' are usually a parasite.

These white things on the guppies look like a few white moles or something? What if after 2 weeks then what if its parasites, then what?

identify what type of parasite it is then treat accordingly...

if you can get some pics we could help you better

if they are feeders i would not take the chance with the P's i would get rid clean the tank twice re-cycle and then restoke you can feed the P's some fresh fish from the market whilst you restock

My buddy bought me 25 guppies for the piranha and about 10 of the guppies had the pimples (parasites). Are the other feeder fish effected by the potential parasite outbreak? I removed the 10 fish that had these pimples on them. My 20 gallon feeder tank currently has about 20 small guppies and some goldfish in there. There isn't any gravel on the bottom of this tank. I turned the heater up to 85 degrees. Do you guys think any other fish are contaminated?

ich can look like pimples, as the white spot are cysts from the protozoan that is digging in their skin...

lots of water changes, thy breed quickly and you can eliminate a great number by changing, also it disposes of the ones that are killed off by the salt and heat.

chances are if the other fish are healthy and not stressed it won't affect them as the other fish have been afflicted. but still take precautions and monitor them

Ok, after i removed the 10 infected pimple looking guppies, I turned up the heater from 80 to 85. About 6 more guppies died today. The 6 that died today didn't have any noticeable pimples on them. Do you think they were infected with ich or parasites or was it the increase in water temp? Also, now that I believe ich was in my tank does that mean the tank is contaminated?

That's why feeding live food is so "dangerous." I have fish that most people would feed live feeders but I don't. When I was younger and wanted to see fish eating fish, I had plenty of expensive fish die from diseased feeders. I've also kept piranha before and fed them a mixture of beef heart, shrimp, and food sticks. Live feeders are expensive, potentially diseased, and may not be the best choice if that's all your fish eat. Because it's just a 20 gallon tank with guppies, I would probably just get rid of all the fish and scrub the tank and equipment down and start all over. While waiting for your feeder tank to cycle, maybe you can try introducing other food to your piranhas. Good luck, The Doctor.

all the fish in the tank with the sick fish are exposed to whatever parasite affected them, so I'd treat them all as if they were sick
