Hey everyone,

I have an adult yabbie (about 5-6 inches) who molted about a month ago. I just noticed a wound on her far right uropod. It looks like a chip out of the exoskeleton with some rusty discoloration around the edges. I believe it may be an infection caused by some wound that may have been experienced when she was soft-shelled. Does anyone have any similar experiences? How might I treat it?

btw the water chemistry is: GH- 6 DH; KH- 2 DH; ph- 7; Nitrate and ammonia- 0ppm. I do weekly 25% water changes and add some aquarium salts.

TY

Could be a form of shell rot, or as you said a wound from when she was soft. It will most likely fix itself when she molts next, but beacuse she is an adult she probably won't molt for awhile. I would just treat her with Melafix and Primafix and watch to see if it gets better or worse.

Ah yes, forgot about the salt bath. Do that.

ive done two treatments; doesnt seem to be helping much but hopefully after a couple more it will clear up a bit :-\

Shell rot doesn't go away. The treatments are meant to slow down and/or stop further infection. You won't be rid of it until the crayfish molts and has a new shell (provided the infection hasn't breached the first one, otherwise you continue treating until the following molt). It's a long, annoying process but it's better than leaving it alone.
