I know this tank has only been a discus setup for about a month but hey you never I guess.
So last night I noticed 2 discus hanging around each other and any of the others that came near got chased away. One of them was "rubbing" her underside against a piece of driftwood and the other was like what can only be described as eating of the driftwood even though there didn't appear to be anything there to eat.
Was this like a dummy run for mating or what?
I have to say I did get a little excited even though I'm not prepared or setup to raise any fry.
If I could get my LFS to take any fry then I would get another tank to raise them first, just wasn't expecting anything so soon.
Thanks.

This behavior is exactly what my angelfish do when they are getting ready to lay eggs. Eating from the area, is grooming a new place to make sure it's clean for the newly laid eggs. I've never had discus, but I imagine since you describe this behavior, it's got to be breeding behavior, since angelfish and discus (I'm told) are so similar.

A while back I had a pair of Angels that did the same thing, and a couple of weeks ago 2 of my discus were doing the same thing. Cleaning the area, chasing everyone else away...but nothing has come of it yet. Just going to let nature take its course and see what happens....Good luck to you. Hope you get lots of fry:)

May discus spawn every other week the eggs last 2 days and then the parents eat them. it seems to be very common for disucs to eat the eggs. Mine are also young so that does not help.

Don't get your hopes up unless you get wiggelers. Young fish take a while to get it right. BUT be happy if they spawn that means they are happy and you are doing something right.

It would be rare if you get wigglers from a first spawn from young discus. What normally happens, is the pair spawn and lay eggs, they turn white, and then they eat them. It usually takes several tries before you get fertilized eggs and a hatch. With some pairs, they never get it right, or sometimes 2 females pair up and lay eggs. You can never raise fry in a community tank anyways. The wigglers will be eaten in a couple days. You need a separate tank for the pair to do that.

Just to update-
They are at it again tonight, only this time she is laying eggs! As soon as they are getting laid onto the bogwood he is eating them, quite literally straight away.
why would this be? Is it just taking a while to "get it right" or could he maybe be a she?
