I have a forty gallon tank and was hoping to start a mbuna tank. I live in the sticks of northern wisconsin so the fish store doesnt really handle many fish. Mostly mbuna. So I was thinking about an electric blue johanni, a cobalt blue, and maybe another cichlid that is equally aggressive. Is the tank to small for three or two of these cichlids? I know johanni and cobalt only exceed five inches right? can i get some ideas, please keep in mind Im really limited on selection and would like to stick with the mbuna family.

Can I fit more then three small mbunas in a forty gallon? I would love to have more fish I just dont know how many i can fit lol

I would look online to expand your options. A species tank of saulousi would look fantastic, with some nice looking afras. Or you could try a group of demasoni with some yellow labs. Is it a 40 gallon breeder? For that size you could easily do 15 or less depending on how big they get. Are you near Madison at all? There is a great LFS here that can order you pretty much anything.

yeah, i would have at least 10...and you might as well make it a species tank with that 40 breeder...and you could do just that, turn and extra dollar with the fish you love.

and i like the johanni, but i would probably go with the cobalts, zebras look better to me when they get bigger, if you could get some metriaclima grashaeki the red top- ice blue zebras, they a stunning and have an almost platinum iridescence to them.

Im an hour away from eau claire so Im not very close to madison at all lol I was thinking about ordering off line but Iv never done it before and im afraid there going to come up dead or something

I would wait for the ACA. It may be a bit of a drive but will be well worth it :)
