Hello, just trying to to get some opinions on a possible mix. I have a 5X2X2.5 tank with a single texas (carpinte) about 4inches which is going to go in there. Hopefully I'll be able to get a mate for him. However I would also like to be able to keep another pair in there. Is this tank big enough for another breeding pair? If so any suggestions for species ( was thinking maybe Tetracanthus)? If not, which size tank would be needed? Lastly Are there any suitable dither fish that could be added or possibly some type of catfish that i could add?
Cheers!

how many gallons is your tank? i don't know what the other fish you talked about is like, but i would only go with one pair of whatever per enclosure. just my opinion though:)

Sounds like you have a 60 to 75 gal tank, I think...

I would not do tetracanthus...for one thing they are african fish from Lake Tang. and need a higher pH (usually done by adding rift lake salt) These do not get as large as a texas and can be very very territorial when breeding (I breed them). Here is a great link on tetracanthus.

I might consiter, in addition to your current texas, a second texas and maybe a pair of JD or parrots since you have a smaller texas right now.

I think he means N. tetracanthus, the Cuban cichlid.
Also, his tnak is much bigger than 60-75. A 75 is 4x18x20, his is much larger.

yeah tht should be fine for a while....but the texas may get ancy

sounds like he has a 165?

sure

should be fine till they get a little bigger

Ahhh...I had not realized that there were 2 N. tetracanthus...after you said that I did some research and I thank you for the info. I will have to be careful in the future to clarify which tetracanthus I have and which tetrachanthus people are talking about....I thought it was kind strange when suggesting to put neolamporlogus tetracanthus with a texas. The cuban makes much more sense.

I will not coment on weather the texas and a cuban will do well since I am not familar (obviously) with the traits of a cuban.

The Cuban Cichlid is a good fish for the Texas.....IF the Cuban has some size on the Tex, every Texas I have had has been a MF, until my last one, who I got smaller than my Jag, JD, RD, and he has been a perfect lil guy in the big tank with them.....

The Cubans can be very tough, a lil Parachromis like in that he (and she) can be a tough lil bastage if he wants to be......Runs my lil 55 (don't panic they are moving) with a Uro, Salvini, and some Cons....

The Cons are the only ones who give any lip (Larger) but they also know when to back off as Ricky, Lucy, and Fred will whoop azz if they decide to....

My Cubans are my Prize fish!

(Thanks to Carpediem for such great Fish! Keystone Aquatics is the cats azz!)
