So I have read enough threads that I have a plan to move. However because I might be moving from a house to an apartment space is now a premium. Due to spacing issues I will likely have to drop my sump and go to a FX5. Normally I would just use the bio media I have, but I have a mix of bio matrix and lava rocks. I can dump the bio matrix in no problem but the lava rocks wont go so it would go through a rather large mini cycle I would think.

My thought was to buy enough bio matrix to fill the fx5 and then do a fish-less cycle in an empty tank. I am not sure at what level of processing I should be looking at? I was going to shoot for removing 4ppm a day.

What I do, though on a much smaller scale, when setting up a new tank with a new filter, is to buy the filter first, and set it up on an existing tank cycled tank. What if you were to get the FX5, move the bio matrix to it, fill it with the balance of new bio matrix, leave the lava rock in the sump and run both? A variation would begin now and gradually replace the lava rock with the amount of bio matrix you'll need in the end. I guess what I'm trying to say, is incorporate the amount of bio matrix you'll need into your system now. Hell you could even take some AC 110's and just put the bio matrix you'll need in them with minimum mech, or any other filter you may have laying about that would hold it.

You could also put the lavarocks in the main tank and slowly take it out as the fx5 matures. If it is pebbles, you can use media bags.

These are great suggestion, I never thought about but I guess I could buy the bimatrix place it in the sump and start removing the lava rocks. I can do this now so even if I don't move I can be more flexable in the future. I don't know why I never thought about cycling the media in the existing tank.
