i'm buying a 135 gallon tank soon (i'm gonna have to due some convincing of my GF to set it up though;)) upgrading from my 20 gallon. i was thinking of using a large canister (10xhr) only except for a powerhead to keep water flowing. i wasn't sure if you all think it would be enough or should i use an additional HOB.

also i wanted to make sure this move wouldn't be to tramatic for my little ones. and i was also wondering if anyone keeps arrowanas w/ their bichirs? also probably gonna get a couple columbian gars as well.

lastly any advice about how to talk my GF to go for it would be super:D

Personally, I'd throw on a few emperor 400s in case one filtration system fails, you wouldn't want any fish (especially those the prices of arrows and the rarer bichirs) to be without filtration for a prolonged period of time.

LOL I don't know about a few...but two E400's with supercartrages would be great along with a Fluval 405.

Your on your own trying to convince the GF there dude...But I'd try a two pronged approch...

Major fanny smooching combined with outright bribery usually works...

Of course you could always just get the thing,,,set it up while shes out and then claim it was always there...

all arowanas get way to big for your tank and a columbian gar i've never heard of do you mean cuban or tropical ? but all true gars get to big also ger have to have a wide tank or they will get a curve in there back which will prevent them from eating and swiming and if the tank is to small they have been know to panic and smash into the galss but those two can be kept with polys and they do very we'll togeather if the tank is big enough

but for the filtration depends what canister you get if its big enough that will take care of most of your filtration i'd say get an biowheel powerfilter and your good you won't need a powerhead but you can have to much current baby polys and small ones (under 6'') don't like very much current at all so make sure its not a wight water river in there

get needlenose gar, and you can have a whole school of them :)

I am of the school of overfiltration. On my 150, I have 2 fx5s, an ac110, a fluval 205 and a wet/dry with a pump that pushes 600-700gph. If you want a single canister, go with an eheim 2260 (or 2262) if you can afford it, or a fluval fx5 if you want to go cheaply.

all i know concerning the colombian is that is what the lfs's call them. they are whitish w/ brown spots, silverish underbelly and a pink tail.

thanks everyone for the input and as far as the tank goes from what i've been told by the seller it is deeper than high so i'm keeping my fingers crossed it might be good for my babies to grow to all most full size before having to upgrade

i had 2 needlenose and they both died extremely close together from what i think was dropsy. i think that something that my other fish were able to handle did them in. i love them but i was wanting to get a gar that was closer to wild.

Personaly I'd recomend larger species of bichir P.e.endlicheri or P.e.congicus if you want to keep arrows and polys in the same tank-Anne
