Hi, I have a 4" gold severum that I believe has prolapse. it looks like his insides are coming out. at the time we noticed it he was still eating but seemed stressed and was getting beaten by his tankmates. So I removed him and set him up in a small hospital tank. I added salt, stopped feeding and raised the temps a bit. Its been a week and it is still the same. from what ive read other peoples fish with this problem it went away by now or the fish died. is there any this else I can do for him. what are your recommendations.

Thanks

Try adding magnesium sulfate (epsom salt). A 1/4 teaspoon per 10g will do the trick.

What do you feed this fish? I'd go with high fiber diet for now.

I thought epsom salt and aquarium salt were the same thing, because I added the recommened dosage per gallon for his hospital tank with api freshwater aquarium salt. should I still add the epsom salt? been feeding them regular cichlid pellets, which I thought was the appropriate food for severums.....??

Thanks

Yes, add the epsom salt. Epsom salt is different from aquarium salt which is sodium chloride.

Severums are omnivorous with juveniles requiring more protein for body development. Is that all you feed them? Vary the menu but stick to high fiber diet for now. Veggies in particular can be used.

great info, thanks lupin. going to fix this guy up with some epsom salt after work, Yea thats pretty much all they are fed, the tank is currently at my girlfriends house but may just get transfered to mine since she is having new carpets put it, so im pretty sure thats all she feeds them but I will get these guys on a better diet.
thanks again. ill update this threat on his progress.

Ok , so after a few days of non feeding in a salted hospital tank and a day of empsom salt, I think its starting to retract a bit. heres a quick cell pic.
oh and lupin the food my gf been using is Hikari cichlid excel says its rich in vegetables.
