One of my RTC'S , about 2.5 feet in length, has a noticeable slime mucous layer protruding from his gills. He's also lost a lot of color and appears to have some rips and tears on his fins. His appetite is still excellent but he's definitely seen better days. I began dosing with 250 mg amoxicillin 3 days ago... I stuff a piece in his cod or tilapia during feeding so in essence I'm only treating him, not the entire pond; 7 Arows, 2 RTC'S, 8 pacu, 2 pang shark/ cats and 1 RCK in 15,000 gallon, 9 foot deep outdoor pond/ aquarium. I'm suspecting its bacterial, possibly from eating a bird... Occasionally a bird will get too close and get packed out of the air by one of the Arows. I've recently picks out so feathers and some beaks from the filter basket. Strange that bacteria would be an issue with the amount of uv sterilization I have. I guess I'll wait and see what happens. Wondering if anyone had similar experience. Also considering adding a vitamin C stabilized tablet to his food every few days to boost immune system. Any thoughts guys and girls?

its normal for shovelnose catfish to shed.... mine used to shed every month or so. all it means is its growing so thats healthy and normal
he just outgrew his old skin

nvm if its slime coming from the gills and he has lost color he isnt shedding most likely a infection in his gills.

watch to see if he keeps rubbing up against things becuase that is a good sign that there is infection

No rubbing...just loss of color and a thin slime cost protruding from one if his gills. This is day 4 of amoxicillin for him...250mg fed directly to him. He's still eating with no problems. Think he may have swallowed a bird...cleared a beak and a foot from filter basket.
