i run my tank about 6 inches low since i have two turtles. my heater seems to be straining keeping the tank at 74 so i added my friends with it keeping it at 78. (this is just a quick fix)

now that heater i have in the water dangling with the top right above the surface (i got the wire hanging down low)

what exactly happens if the whole heater gets wet?

Heaters can go all the way under water

These days most heaters are waterproof. If yours is not waterproof then you may kill everything in your tank. Most likely you will just pop a breaker.

Take a pic of the heater an I'll tell ya if it's waterproof or not, or just google the make and model. or........na never mind :)

The heater will either have a line towards the top that says "water level" or it will be fully submersible.

or it may have the same line and say "min water level"
either way.. if its a glass heater.. keep the glass under water..
