I caught this guy in a shallow creek under a rift of rocks. The pool he was in was no deeper than 2 feet. There were several dozen creek chub in the pool as well. He's been in my tank for about 3-4 months and I originally thought it was a warmouth but no longer think so. He eats the same chub from that area and eats pretty much anything he can fit in his mouth. Very aggressive in my opinion and picks of clown knife fish bigger than him. Any idea as to the ID? Thanks. I also noticed that when I took these pictures the blue around his face progressively became more prominent maybe because he was scared and trying to look bigger?? Thanks again.

Where at in pa are you? I know the state pretty well since I live here and can narrow it down to a few based in where you live and the habitat it was caught in (shallow creek).

Me too :).

Elongate: Probably a Green
Taller Bodied: Probably a Bluegill or Pumpkinseed

I wanna say you got it exactly right with the green. Any info or experience on them? Mine seems very aggressive and goes after feeders. Like I said I've had him a few months and his color seems to pop some times more than others...any correlation with that and other factors? Thanks for all the help.

I keep a female green myself, currently in a 30L (36x12x16) with 3 creek chubs that are bigger than her, she'll soon be upgraded to a tank that's 125-240 gallons. She's about 4" now hopefully going to get 6-8", unstunted males can get 6-12" but sadly Southwest PA has a lot if stunted sunfish populations. Males are much, much more aggressive and can be terrors to the point of not tolerating tankmates whereas females are still aggressive, but will almost always live fine with tankmates.
