i posted this in the flowerhorn thread as i thought it was a fh but theyre saying no. i bought this at petsmart as red texas whcih its obviously not. i but three others and those did turn out to be red dragon flowerhorns but this one turned out like this. is it a synspilus or possible cross? the fish in person has a orange red head and the body where it looks gold in the pictures is actually a metallic green. although today looked very goldish for what ever reason. he also is developing a rounder forehead which he didnt have before. not a kok or hump but its rounding of.

probably not a pure syn, crossed with something.head shape maybe some festae in it,or maybe amphilophus....it was purchased as"flowerhorn"? they mix various fish to get them

but one of the most common types of flowerhorn Kamfa is crossed with Vieja. infact to be classified as a Kamfa you could breed any flowerhorn with a Vieja species (or BP) to make a Kamfa. obviously there are some high quality expensive ones on the market, this could just be one of the random fry.

As anyone who has bred hybrids will tell you, you get all kinds of different fry with different traits, no two are the same. so it is possible that you just got a really random combination of traits in this fish. which would still count as a flowerhorn, as a flowerhorn is a hybrid of many different fish and can look many different ways.

I think what the FH people mean is it isnt what they would call a Flower horn, aka perfect in every way and cost a ton.

This is one of 3 fish i bought at petsmart labled red texas. my other two are very obvious red dragons. this one was just different at the store so i got him. i didnt think it was flowerhorn because no red eye and no spot behind the head but i believe kamfas can have this right? it looks like it will be a nice fish to raise out regardless. and his head wasnt always curvy its been growing thta way now. Also the pictures dont show the crazy colors on this fish.

Ya it looks like a mistreated vieja fish, possibly synsp. Definitely there was some cross-breeding involved though, give it a good home and the colors will come.
