Hi, I am looking into getting my first tegu! I don;t want one thats gonna get huge. I am going to build either a 7x3 or a 8x3. What is the best kind of tegu and the tamest, etc? I heard Argentine BW Tegus are the best, is this true? I want to get plenty of research done before I buy one.

Argentines ARE the best. My boy Dimitri is awesome! Ok, maybe I'm biased. The Reds are pretty awesome too.
Enclosure size sounds great. All the Argentines I've met have always been incredibly easy to handle and practically dog-tame. Very smart lizard, and not enough of them on the market IMO.

Thank You I think I am going to get a Argentine BW. I have heard so much good stuff about them.

check out tegutalk.com for info, its run by bobby hill who is one of the bst when it comes to tegus
also there is a ton of info there

Although some Colombians tame down, I would advise you to stay away from them, and like everyone else said, Argentinians are the best. they make Amazing pets.

TeguTalk.com is a great place to learn from experienced Tegu owners (I'm Toby_H there)...

"Stastically", Argentina Tegus are much much much more tame, or easier to tame, than Columbians...

Reds, Blues, Black & Whites as well as 'Extreme Giants' are all "Argentinian Tegus"...

I have seen very aggressive Argentinian Tegus. Though in each case it was due to poor living conditions. Essentially, any animal that lives in constant stress will not be a friendly animal.

Yet, a well cared for Arg Tegu is very easy to make puppy dog tame. Their care is quite easy, but there are a few key points that you cannot overlook.

I could go on for hours about how sweet my '08 male Arg Tegu is. It's never bitten anyone, it free roams the house frequently, it free roams outside without running off, it visits local pet stores frequently, it tolerates children petting poking and pulling at it without any fear or threat. People are constantly shocked by how friendly he is.

Taming my Tegu was super simple. I handled him frequently and politely giving him absolutely no reason to fear or dislike me. I gave him a large enough cage with time to free roam (much more as an adult than a youngster), proper food, light and water...

I confess, raising him I feared I wasn't doing enough to make him as sweet as I hoped him to be. But now as a young adult Tegu, I honestly could not imagine how he could be sweeter.

...okay, if he learned to clean up his own poo, he would be sweeter... but other than that he's perfect!

I'd suggest Arg B&W Tegu. Red's are a little smaller but they're also SLIGHTLY harder to tame down and are marginally more prone to complications due to diet and/or humidity, temps, etc (AKA slightly less hardy overall).

If you can find a Blue though I'd get that; from what I understand its pretty much a normal tegu only smaller (as far as care is concerned).

You wont regret a blue. Little more $, but so worth it. Best looking tegu too.:headbang2
