sounds stupid but is it possible to create a snail infestation? would it grow out of control? if there was a way to control a snail infestation then it wouldnt be so hard to own a pufferfish.

It is real easy to get a malaysian sand snail infestation, but they are dangerous for larger puffer teeth. I threw some dwarf puffers into a infested tank and they went to town killing after they could eat no more.

If you want a tank to grow snails, setup another tank with a few small fish and dedicate it to snails. I have a 40gal with about 25 mysterysnails I am growing out for my puffer. Myster snails do not grow fast enough to breed for a steady food supply (at least not on a small scale). My Fahaka also eats clams and shrimp.

Abundance of food supply is the leading cause of snail population boom. Controlling the population by using a fish is by all means wrong without considering the size of tank and tankmates first.

Lupin - I think he wants a snail explosion ot use as a food source... sorta like breeding your own feeders...

Overfeeding in a tank with a few snails is what did it for my daughter's tank. We ended up "fixing it" with a queen botia - a couple of larger snails for broodstock, but all the small ones were snacks...

i was thinking of a snail exposion with my fish living in there so he can eat when he wants. but a snail infestation as a breding program could work too.

Pond snails are about your best bet, small and fast reproducing. Take a 10 gallon tank and throw as many of them as you can into it. Feed them and they shall reproduce.

very easy to make a snail infestation

mix up 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen, add some snails, add some food, and VIOLA......insta-snails (well, almost)

as mentioned, mystery snails seem to grow slowly, so they are no good. neither are nerites. they can only reproduce in brackish-saltwater.
