Im thinking of building a pond im my backyard but i dont think the fish will make it through the winter. I am wondering if there will be a way to heat it. I read about a pond where the person used the hot water from the radiator which wouldnt be that hard but how would i regulate the temperature. any ideas. it gets fairly cold here usually 15degrees farenheit sometimes colder and we often get a few feet of snow but i think some type of pool cover in winter could take care of that

Goldfish, koi and natives can survive in a pond 24" in Zone 4 (Minnesota)

How big of a pond are you wanting?

Insulate the pond well (bottom, sides & top with 2" Styrofoam). You can run several types of heating, but you need aeration too. Check with your agricultural extension agent to find out where the frost line is in your area and go at least 18" below it. pond de-icers don't heat much (not there intended use), submerged aquarium heater work well if the right size is used.

Do you have fish now?

i have some tropical fish that are starting to get too big for their tank and was wondering if it would be possible to keep them in the pond i am goint to build. the frost line is 36 inches here so i could make a 4'6" deep pond. i was figuring the pond would be approx 5'long and 4'wide being oval in shape. Will a aquarium heater be able to handle this? how many watts would i need. i would cover the pond in the winter and i could use some sort of aeration device.
