Is it? I was thinking about a sump for my 50gal tank, and the only gal size that can fit is a 10 gal.

Yea, it could work. If the tank drains less than 4 gallons and you don't fill the 10 more than 1/3rd the way to prevent the sump overflowing onto the floor in a power outage, test this to be sure.

I think you'd be better off buying a long narrow rubbermaid type container (or two), otherwise you won't have much space to work with.
If ya have the money, order a custom built glass/acrylic tank.

Can I make a custom sump, dimensions 45 inches long, and 8.5 inches wide? I dont know how tall. Is this possible?

Also, are sumps loud? Is what i'm thinking of the same think as a wet/dry? 2 names but same thing?

It's 8.5 inches wide is what i'm looking for, not 10 =D. Still possible, how would one so elongated work? Where can I go for help on building one?

To answer the original question, yes, you can use a ten gallon tank to make a filter. Or what ever container will hold water.
Here is what I did:

The sump and wet/dry are separate. The wet/dry operates off line; it is the green tub.

Here is the sump:

And the wet/dry:

My total cost on the wet/dry was fourteen dollars, the pump was ten dollars, and the media was 34 dollars. Pot scrubbers are cheaper than bio-balls. I will be posting a thread about the two soon.

I just finished a small wet/dry for my wife's 20 gallon long. I used a ten gallon tank and some srcap acrylic from work. I was even able to build the overflow box myself. I used a small underwater pump ( 250 gph) and some flexible hosing that I bought from the LFS for ten bucks. This tank is now crystal clear even with the high bio-load ( 3 Goldfish + Gourami + koi + 3 small red eyed tetras). The hardest thing I ran into was getting the overflow and the pump matched up.

I did a 10g for my friends 75g with a mag drive 400gph pump it works fine his fish are small though so there is not much of a load

1. Is making a 10 gal tank sump for my 50gal worth it?? Actually, how big of a sumptank should/can I have, suggestions?

2. Or would a custom (22gal) 45 inch long, 8.5 inches wide, 13 inches tall tank work better? It seems very long but its the biggest I can fit in my stand.

3. Are sumps loud? My tanks are in my room that's why. If yes, anyway to silence it hopefully completely?

4. How much room does the overflow behind the tank need? If I need more room I rather do it now since theres no substrate and fish. How much room should I leave behind the tank?? I got 4 inches of space back there, from tank to wall.

5. Im still a bit confused, a sump is a wet/dry right?

1. Yes

2. Yes

3. No

4. No. I thought a picture of a sump and a wet/dry on the same system was clear enough.
