This stuff is pond media, I believe. It reminds me of ribbed, normal old tubing.

Could you just cut up a piece of similar looking tubing and use it as media? I know beneficial bacteria will grow on anything, just curious if this would actually have a good amount of surface area due to the texture?

Would it help if the insides and outsides were roughed up with sandpaper?

doesnt look too bad, and if you got the space for it may as well. That being said it doesnt look overly dense either, but at least it will never clog!

You do not need to scrape it with sand paper. Bio will attach to anything

Yeah, roughing it up might slightly increase the surface area, but I really don't think it would be worth the labor involved. The bacteria will attach just fine without doing that

The fish hatchery where I used to work used probably a literal ton of this stuff in their filtration systems. I spent HOURS with a band saw cutting big roles of field tile into 6" sections like that

Looks like it takes up alot of volume while providing a smaller comparable amount of surface area. But yes it will work a bio media.
