First off I’m sorry for not having pics for this thread, I know it would have been a big help but I thought about it once I left the LFS and I live too far from it to return for pics...

I entered a LFS few days ago and noticed they had a tank with Zonata Viejas and a separate tank with hartwegi Viejas. I have never seen these specimens in person before but just in pics and the Zonata is a gorgeous blue fish. But the labeled zonatas that they had looked nothing like the pics; it had no blue on him at ALL!! It was a dark unattractive color and red tips along the top/bottom fins and tail. I’ve heard from people that after buying Zonotas, that they were disappointed in the colors because they never turn out as blue as the pics online BC they were Photoshop. Then the Hartwegi was a little bit more attractive because it had a red head to it and looked better but once again it was a little dark and didn’t have that much color to it like the pics online. I’m not sue if its normal for these fish to look like this because it’s my first time seeing them but I also noticed that ALL the fish tanks in this fish store have BLACK backgrounds in the tanks and all the familiar fish I do recognize always look darker at this particular store, so does the back ground affect the colors of these beautiful colored fish? Or is it normal that these fish to look like this? If I purchase these fish, will their colors change to their natural bright colors bc my fish tank has no dark features at all?:confused:

Sorry for the long thread but just wanted some feed back because i would truly like to own these specimens but dont want to waste my money on the wrong fish:confused:...Thank YOU!!

I do find that black backgrounds and substrate (especially substrate) cause fish to darken. They might brighten up in your aquarium, or they might not. It depends on your setup, level of stress, water quality, food, etc.

What store did you see these at? I'm also located on Long Island.

The way you describe the zonatus sounds about right for a fish that is young or stressed out. When I got my zone (9" or so) he even looked like this as he mellowed out he became more and more blue and less grey. they are extremely aggressive and wont take crap off anyone

Sorry i havent been able to answer but the LFS im referring to is Pet WareHouse, Carle Place. For some reason they have awesome fish this week LOl includind Doviis and different type of Viejas.

The Zonata and Hartwegi i saw were already about 4- 5", its normal for them to look pale and dark at that size? What size do they show their beautiful colors??
I really want to make sure its a Zonata, i guess im going to get one tomorrow LOL

Yeah, that's one of my usual stops when I'm making my fish store rounds. I haven't been in there in about a week, but I definitely have to go check this out and see for myself (never seen Dovii at either of their locations, Carle Place or Copiague).

Just stopped by Pets Warehouse...they really did get a ****-load of Vieja species in. The Hartwegi look great, almost picked one up but showed some will-power ;). The Zonatus didn't interest me as much and they also had a couple of larger Argentea that they got in. And they actually did have Dovii as well. I wanted to ask the owner where they suddenly picked up all of these species that they don't ordinarily have, but unfortunately I was in a rush. I'll never for the life of me understand why they opted for black substrate though...it drains the color out of every one of those fish, with exception of the red devils.

See i told you, Im actually going to stop by there in a few.......... You think those Zonatus were the real deal? and would they get the Blue color once introduced to a non black Substrate?
