Most fish reproduce by the femal laying eggs then the male coming to fertelize them and they protect them until they are born. Now I was wondering if it was possible for a Femal Oscar for lay eggs and a male natural fish such as a sunny or maybe a bass or something to fertelize them. I know that this would be exremley rare if even possible but I was just wondering. And no I am not going to try it lol I was just wondering. Thanks.

Yes but no thats called hybridizing you can do that with fish but not oscars i don't think any one has hybridized an oscar

Actually I think there is an oscar hybrid...I cant find it but I swear I saw a picture of one that looked really funky. I dont like hybrids personally but yes some fish can be breed with other species and produce a cross.

However they need to be more closely related than an oscar and a sunfish

No it's not possible for a sunfish to fertilize an Oscars eggs. for this to work the fish have to relatively closely related. sunfish and by extension bass are not related to Oscars closely enough for them to breed successfully. Possibly some other cichlid might be able to cross with Oscars but not north American sunfish.

exactly. sunfish aren't even cichlids.

as far as an O not hybridizing. I've never seen it, but i would be willing to bet money an O could be successfully bred with Astronotus Crassippinis.

what would be more interesting is another female or male fostering [not fertilizing] eggs of another [maybe closely related] species. that's actually what i thought the thread was about.

Haha, I've never seen a hybrid oscar. They have their own elaborate mating rituals.

But even if it was done artificially, I don't think it would work. It's like having a Bison mate with an Elk. Even if they do it, something is going to go wrong.... :P
