Possibly a little hot?

Hey,

I haven't actually started my SW tank yet but Im well on my way, its set up as a FW tank at the moment with all the filter, lighting and heater Ill be using for SW. Its a 20G long tank, and Ive recently noticed some problems with the temperature getting a little high.

Today I recorded the temperature at roughly hour intervals. It started at 27 degrees celcius which is 80F I think and rose to 28C which is 82F. Its tapered off to 26.6C now at night. I went and bought a fan so Ill run that tomorrow and see what happens.

Will that be a bit to high for a pair of occ clowns, LR and maybe some of the easier softies? And should I set my heater to 27 degrees to minimise temperature fluctuations?

By the way I haven't set it up yet because I have uni exams and if I do get it set up I know what will happen, I will be distracted from study. So only a few more weeks and Ill get going :D
 
your on the high end but you should be fine even at 82. keep in mind this will increase the possibility of your fish getting sick. you want to keep it closer to 78 degrees if you can. a fan is an excellent idea. keep in mind it will increase your evaporation rate so watch your salinity
 
Yep Im all over it :D

Im so excited Im finding it hard to study rofl.

Today its easily as hot as yesterday but the tank has stayed at a steady 25C for 3 hours now with the lights on and fan, this time yesterday it was at 27.4C so the fan is making a huge difference.:headbang2
 
I also have a 20 long and I sometimes have trouble keeping the temperature low. Right now it's not a huge problem because it's staying cooler in here but I still point a fan at it to keep the temperature down and it seems to be working fine. It also helped to elevate the lights just a bit. You don't wanna raise them too high though or else you eliminate a significant portion of your light.
 
Yeah Ive got those brackets that raise the light above the tank by about 5cm so theres plenty of air flow between the light and water. Its so freaking hot right now outside, but the temperature of the water has reached 25.7C so im pretty impressed with this fan. Yesterday at this time it was at 28C so its made a considerable difference.

Just Im tempted to move the fan away from the tank and point it at me :grinno:
