Hi everybody I have a mangrove jack which is an aussie native. I was in need of a new filter as the older one has been broken where the suction cups attach it to the side of the tank, I have put the new filter in yesterday and also added about a 1/3 of the tank of water. I left the old filter in so that the good bacteria in the tank wasn't removed until it had built up in the new filter. The mangrove jack changes color very frequently depending on its mood but at the moment it is displaying some odd colors i have never seen before. Also it seems to be taking lots of deep breaths and constantly swimming but only using its pectoral fins, so basically it will use both pecs to lunge forward but then put its pecs out to pause immediately after each stroke so it is basically "bobbing" forward for lack of a better word. Could anybody tell me if the fish is ill or is it possibly that it is tired/exhausted from fighting the increase of water flow in the tank? Thanks everyone in advance.

I was going to ask where you'd gotten it from untill I saw your location, haven't seen one in years....Not sure about the color changes possibly ammonia or parasites.

I just got a jack and did the exact same thing with the new filter etc. except mine just bobs just above the gravel and wont go anywhere and wont eat, have you resolved your problem leeroy? If so what did you do?!?

My jack does this often, one time was a nitrite spike, other not enough surface arrogation and the last few times I believe are from metals in the water, after using cuprisorb by seachem the issue has stopped.

When ever a mangrove jack turns a dull pale- silver color you should jump and check everything.

Could it possibly be the fact that changing filters without letting the good bactiera transfer over? Im not sure about leeroys case but i went from a cheap interal power filter to an external canister filter and only left the internal one in for a few hours.

So could it be an uncycled tank now?

Probably not "uncycled" but maybe an decrease in waste removal. There is bacteria all over the tank, with very large portions being in the substrate....unless you have a bare tank. I would try and maybe add some salt. A very weak salt content in freshwater will aid in a fishes breathing and general stress. 1 teaspoon per 5gal of water. If its fins are clamped, do a water change.
