There are not many large GATF or armatus out there and the reason is obvious. We kill them! Post here the cause of death of your monster, along with tank size, turnover, and tank mates. In parenthesis add what you would have changed about your setup after seeing how they died. By doing this, hopefully we will see more monsters here on MFK!

I'll start off:

x1 13"+ armatus - filter shut off
110g; 10-12x turnover; dats, rays, aro, pbass
(lighter stocking)

x3 11"++ armatus - arrived to me dead

x1 7" armatus - killed by other armatus
29g; 25-35x turnover; 6 armatus, 1 pleco
*I have moved the other 6 into a 180g with 8-10x turnover with some rays and a bicuda, no more aggression issues. If I moved them 2 days earlier I still would still have 7 armatus..
(larger tank)

x6 4-5" VATF - arrived to me dead

x12 4-6" VATF - killed each other
100g, 10x turnover, by themselves
(larger tank, more cover, add constant supply of live food and/or dither fish)

Awesome thread idea.

I have wondered about this several times myself.

Sorry I have nothing to add, never owned these exact species just there little cousins.

hydrolycus armatus:

i had mine only for 2-3 weeks before i killed it.:(
i brought it back from HK.
my cichla constantly picked on it and it ate very little,so i separated it.
it did fine for the next couple of weeks and even grew about 2".
then one day i woke up to find it with a lump near the pectoral area and it passed that night.
no change in setup.
it was fed quarantined feeders mainly, that the other fish also ate,in an attempt to grow it fast enough to get to a big size so i could retry with the cichla.
water changes were anything from 20-70%,usually around 50%,every few days,or even less.

i lost a few ATFs in the years ive kept them, all due to tankmate issues.

i think "atf" blanket applies to you sir, but hopefully no story to share...

I'm almost ashamed to be in on this one but here goes;1 VATF killed by a Jardini. They were both six inchers in a 60 gallon growout and I was just about to move them to bigger quarters.
1 Scomberiodes killed by Armatus
1 Redtailed Tat killed by the same Armatus
1 Armatus, reached ten inches when it took out the two fish mentioned above.I'm not sure why the arm died but the other fish had visible bite wounds when I came home and found them dead.I did a water change after removing them and a day later the arm was dead.

I really don't like my rays when it comes to this topic...

Well if it does then the moral of my story is fish can not fly. But if given the slightest opertunity they allways jump out of my tank and try.

Fang got stung in the eye by a stingray. he was 22" and it was prob the biggest freak accident ever. he was the only armatus ive ever lost but ive lost alot of othe payara in the past using unsafe meds :irked:

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the losses:(
