Ive got a female jag about a year and a half old by herself. As a youth she was vibrantly active and she recently became sexually active, laying eggs a couple months back and protecting them vigilantly and aggressively. since then I can't help but notice her sluggishness and general depressed demeanor after her fry never hatched. I feel she is saddened by the futility of her instinctive actions as a creature.

I know fish feel enjoyment and excitement, I've seen fish feel cocky too. why would they not feel the opposite emotions as well.
the loss of offspring in a nurturing species is bound to be a traumatic event.

Then explain to me why a spawning pair of fish will eat their fry.

sure, as soon as you can explain parents that shake their children to death, or rape them, or beat them, or force them to be in beauty pageants. there are aberrations in every species.
not every one should be a parent.
