That shredded tail is now healed. He fought with a jaguar cichlid before twice his soze but he still beat the jaguar. Will even challenge my 16" cheveron snakehead.

Very nice looking Ornatum :) It seems to me that Ornatums are fighters, I have one that just won't quit, I have to add a divider in the tank. Do you feel the same way? Or can anybody comment on the aggression that they seem to experience with their ornatum?

Well I guest it depend on individual. Mine doesn't really starts the fight but if being challenged, it won't quit till it beat the challenger even if it get torn part. Mine is more of a territorial than a brawler. Or maybe just the way I keep him with other large monster fish. If I add this guy in an all cichlid tank, then yeah probably gonna keep fighting.

What other large monster cichlids have you kept him with? I am curious if they should be could be house with say Grammodes, Red Devils/Midas, Motaguense... I am thinking I may have misjudge their aggression. I am thinking that those cichlids listed above would be too much for an Ornatum?

I got an 11" male umbee in there that he chases when the umbee gets near. Also a big 15" Jaguar cichlid that he beat last Dec. When he was only at 10". This guy is no pushover. He can handle his own. With a large brown teeth that can cause real damage. He also fought my 16" chevron snakehead. A chevron snakehead is one of the top 5 most aggressive killer snakehead out and he can manage to fight it off. This guy is bada$$ but not a fight starter so that is for the best. They say it can grow to 16"+ so at that size I wonder what it can do to other fish. Especially at breeding time.

Never mixed it with a dovii, rd/midas, beani and black nasty yet so I'm not sure where this guy can hold up to.

Dayum, I didn't know that they could handle themselves like that, when people talk about aggressive cichlids they never mention the Ornatum. I have had all the cichlids you have mentioned at some time or another, but never had the ornatum in the same tank with none of them. Maybe that is why he beats on my Escondido, and chases the Green Terror, he is naturally more aggressive then they are. I did have him share a tank with a red devil before, and the red/devil would rule the tank, although they were small then... I got rid of the red devil not knowing that they would probably be able to share tank space. Didn't know that Ornatums were that aggressive...

Ornatum is still new in the hobby so we still have more to find out. Well my umbee is still young so it's still gonna get aggressive and might turn the table someday. I still put Dovii, Umbee, Odo, Beani on my first 4 aggressive cichlid. Never keep escondido before but green terror gets beat up mos of the time when keep with other supreme aggressive cichlids.
