I've had my fair share of aquarium products that are just terrible. (For example: Marineland Precision Submersible Heaters, and Tetras Whisper Filters). I want to know about other products to avoid so that I (and others who view this thread) don't have to waste money on something that doesn't work and/or has the chance to create a potentially lethal aquarium disaster.

Marineland filters are amazing as long as they are sizes 200B and below. The larger ones (penguin 350 and the emperor) are SO loud. They still work fine, but the sound is annoying. Also, top fin filters are just plain crap. They have no biological filtration whatsoever, and they break after a month or two of use.

Ah. I have a Marineland penguin filter for my 55. Compared to my tetra whisper filter in my 20 gallon, the penguin is just silent. The whisper filter is so loud I can't even sleep without turning it to a high flow setting. Plus, the way it's designed, there ends up being more backwash coming out than actual filtered water.
