I have just recently went through a semi tank kill. I lost a 12" Black Ghost Knife, a 7" fire eel, and a 12" pleco. All of these fish were very dear to me. Especially the BGK. I had these fish in a 110g tank with 2 large angels, at least 6" from dorsal, to bottom fin, and 4 Clown loaches.

I never discovered the cause of the tank kill. I do weekly water changes, and check my water chemistry often. The tank lived happily for over a year. Then suddenly, BANG! Fish dropping dead left and right.

The worst part of this story is, is that after doing daily water changes,(even though my aquaria pharmaceuticals master test kit showed nothing to be wrong with the water chemistry.) for a week. And managing to save all, but the fish listed above. My tank then came down with a case of ich. The remaining fish, were still acting lethargic, although much better than before. They too, ended up dieing. I was totally bummed.

The lessen i suppose, is that if I was as smart as a like to think I am. I should have foreseen the ich outbreak. and been ready with a treatment plan in place.

I don't really know though, is it common for ich to suddenly pop up, after a serious alement to your tank.?

I don't think you could have predicted the ich outbreak.

yeah, you definitely notice the white spots. But after the fish had been under so much stress from whatever caused the tank kill, they were fairly week and more prone to die quickly from ich.

Yes, if the fish are seriously stressed by disease, pH shock, rapid temperature change, etc., it lowers the fishes resitance to ich.

I am always prepared to treat for ich, because it is the most common affliction.
