Im really digging the istlanum, there are 2 variations from what I've read which are red and green. There isn't alot of info out there or pictures. Please post em up and tell a little about them, how's their aggression? What kind of tank do you keep them in community or a species only? Have you spawned them? Are they shy or tank busters? Max size? Prone to any diseases?

 ill be looking for a pair at the DC convention this july!

I kept the Red varient and I completely regret selling my pair:( they were one of the most beautiful pairs of cichlids ive ever owned and i am on the hunt for another pair but iam very picky on looks. i would prefer wild but ill settle for what ever i can get. and as far as i know there isnt many different bloodlines goin around. GMfishnut had a beautiful pair that spawned and they were distributed to Rapps and Conkel. my pair spawned and i sent fry to Ira and my last group of F1's to cichluvr- Dan. and to my knowledge my pair was one of very few wild breeding pairs left in the hobby. most everyone i know has either lost the male or female due to aggression. now there are plenty of F1s floating around. i sold my pair to GMfishnut last year and would love to get an update if he still has them.

As for info on them, well they are very aggressive and outgoing. my wild pair i kept divided until they were 4.5" then i happened to be lucky enough to keep them undivided for 8 months and 3 spawns then they started getting rough again ans since i wasnt going to chance loosing either one i put the divider back in. My F1 growouts did great in a community untill they hit 3.5" at which they were becoming sexually mature and then needed to be removed and divided for pairing. They have awesome teeth and can do alot of damage to eachother during courting just like Dovii.

If you want to be successful with keeping Istlanum and since there isnt many to go around i would recomend keeping them divided and when they arent then supervise them. as these guys are just as aggressive if not more than grammodes. My male and female both turned into glassbangers once fry was present. my second batch of fry had a bloat issue due to a bad batch of brine shrimp:(

These are very beautiful and awesome fish to keep, i definitely recomend getting some if you have the room:) here is a couple videos of my Wild pair when i had them.

WOW!! Why on earth would you get rid of those! Thanks for the great info FWP they were very aggressive with the fry my dovii aren't even that crazy! How long did you have them, did you grow them from a group of fry? Anyone got some green istlanum? Ira has some now...tempting...

Such a stunning pair you had there Jason !!!

Here was the 4" male (green) I had that was killed by my 5" male trimac after some how getting through the divider, I was devastated when I found him upside down and all chewed up . He had so much potential IMO.

This species is def one of my most favorite of all. Fins, color and attitude!

LOL well Im not a selfish guy and wanted to share but i could have done that with selling fry lol. i think my biggest reason was that i scared myself with having such a great track record with them that i felt it was only a matter of time before the male killed the female and i didnt want it to happen on my watch lol and yes i kick myself in the ass for ever thinking like that and i garentee that will never happen again:) I bought three at 3.5" from Joefatfish in Oct of 09' paired them off, spawned them 3 times and sold them in july of 10'

yeah i do understand, that was an AWESOME looking pair FWP. bastardfish, got any pics? :) love to see an 11"er
