I dont see too many people with experience with E-eels. How many people here have had them? If you had to tell someone the best way to keep them, what would you say?

post anything you know about e-eels. i'll be getting one this week (fingers crossed)

--things like feeding (how much, how often)
--best substrate, decor
--possible to keep others in the tank (even is devided so they wont become food)
--and any special instructions regarding not being shocked i.e. tank maintainance, moving fish from store to tank, and anything else you can add.

EXTREMELY EASY TO KEEP...EASY TO WEAN ONTO SHRIMP, THAT'S WHAT MINE IS ON AND FROM TIME TO TIME IT GETS BEEF HEART...

IT GROWS BUT NOT AS FAST AS PPL CLAIM...MINE GETS ABOUT A SHRIMP OR TWO A DAY AND ITS NOT GROWING THAT FAST...NO WHERE NEAR THE RATE OF MY RTC/TSN HYBRID CAT...HOPE THAT HELPS

do you know of any possible tankmates? i heard synos can tolerate the shock.

I have kept them for a while. Once they settle in, there great pets. Come begging for food, active. Very easy to lean off live, will take any meaty food, squid, sliver-sides, ect. I have had people keep with arowana, rays & other eels.

thanks folks but im suprised there arent any more people with e-eel experience

i know SOME stuff about e-eels.They do make great pets once they get settled in.Be cautious as they have a shock that can stun a horse(800 volts,i think). There sort of expensive like the most ive seen is 126$.Also,when cleaning the tank,NEVER use a metal net.Use a wooden one.Never touch it(I think we all know that). They need a relatively large tank.not huge, they can grow 3 to 5 feet in home aquaria. They are voracious little beasts, and will probably take anything(well, sort of).Squid, fish, shrimp, and silver sides are good foods for them.A heater is also requiered.

shoot! here, they go for about $100 per foot. im working with a guy in getting a 3 footer.

I have to disagree with the comment about slow growth, I bought one January '07 at 14" and he's now hitting 33". On the other hand I bought a smaller 8" specimen in April and shes only grown to about 12" but I didn't feed her quite so much.

I was feeding large amounts of food every other day.

My lil girl gets a lancefish, muscle and few prawns all chopped up.

My big guy gets 4 whole prawns, 5 muscles, 6 lancefish and a small fillet of fish. They both get fed every 2-3 days at the moment.

I have about 6 tilapia left from about 100 babies I put in as food and they seem to be doing alright but if I leave the feeding too long another tends to disappear.

Tank maintenance.....just be careful! I put my hand in his tank but if he comes near I take my hand out, and don't put your hand in with the food, once a good size they just going into a feeding frenzy attacking everything and anything in the water around the food.

Oh and don't skimp on tank sizes, as big as you can! Decor wise I have a few large hardy plants such as giant vallis, java fern and larger species of crytps and then huge bits of wood.
