All I know is you breed a gold/pink jd with an ebjd which will give you blue gene gold gene fry and then you mate those fry with another ebjd and wahlah you have platinum jds

They are not genetically altered in the sense of man unnaturally tweaking their genes. Platinums have two different types of broken genes which gives them their color. The first is the electric blue gene which causes them to have more than normal blue over their bodies and the second is the gold gene which causes them to have much less melanin. Man has combined both mutations into this same fish much like has been done with other "fancy" aquarium fish like angels and discus.
Actually, if you mate a blue gene gold gene to an ebjd, you will get some ebjd's but no platinums. Both parents must have at least one copy of both the blue and gold genes for there to be any platinums in the fry.
It's all hit or miss, some EBJD's are nasty tho. I find most JD's mild. Even your typical ones. My little gold/plat buggers are just fine. But I will say they seem to grow slower, like the EBJD.
