Hey everyone I have a little sump problem ( I think.) My pump came in today and I noticed It moves a lot of water. My plans for the refuge was plants and maybe a cray fish or two but I'm pretty sure that would be pointless. Few questions. My sump doesn't exactly fit in my stand perfect. The black trim is getting cought on the wood. I sanded it down enough so it fits but it's hard to pull out. My question is is there a size tank a bit less in width but maybe higher? My sump is a 20 long. ( bare tank ATM no baffles). My other concern is if my over flow fails I'm pretty sure my main tank will over flow . My main tank is a 40 breeder. The over flows are cut right above the black trim. Also how can I DIY sponge on the pump? And how can I add a auto shut of? My pump is a Rio 2500. Also can people post pics of their sump on how their piping goes into the sump and how their entire sump is setup? Also how thick should my baffles be. Will 1/8 be good? Seems kinda thin

pretty vague description TBH but ill try!

that pump will shift about 750 GPH! so yeah it does shift a lot of water! you can get away with 200GPH. can you return it? or sell it on Ebay...or here!

you can get glass / ply tanks made up any size you require! (or DIY) usually a darn sight cheaper than any off the shelf from ur LFS.

what kind of overflow are you using? "The over flows are cut right above the black trim" dont understand this sorry

i work with glass and anything less than 6mm is a pain in ar$e. go with 6mm!

for sizing of pipes, what ever is the return size of the pump connector (that you attach the hose to) bigger than that! and preferebly with 2 tank exit pipes

if the over flow does fail, yes, the pump will pump the water out of the sump into the tank untill it has no water left to pump. thats why its best to go for as large as possible so it doesnt block of have 2 where 1 could could handle the workload alone

i do not use the "standard" design of sump. check out my 200g plywood tank thread in diy tanks you will see my sump design.

hope this helps!

Here is what my 20 gallon long sump looks like. I'll probably upgrade to a 55 gallon in the future.
Water flows through the overflows from display tank View attachment 817268

into two filter socks then goes to my drip tray which has blue filter pad.

The water trickles over the Seachem matrix and lava rock.

The water then goes through some carbon. And into a section containing a bunch of water hyacinths.

The water is then returned to the main tank through my pump.

Hope this helps.

no help at all.
get a smaller pump.
I'll be using 1/4 inch glass for my baffles.
seachem matrix is meant to be submerged.

Use 500 mL of Matrix™ for each 200 L (50 gallons*) of water. Matrix™ may be placed in any kind of filter, and is particularly effective in a canister filter. Matrix™ is sufficiently large that no filter bag should be required for most applications. Matrix™ works well in drip tray systems, but you may find that the larger Pond Matrix™ is better suited for such applications.

Matrix is meant to be used however you want. My wet/dry section has 6 L of matrix in it, and half of it is submerged. Pond matrix and regular matrix are basically the same thing just ones bigger. Since my sump is only a 20 gallon I wanted to fit more media in a smaller area.
