After some advice from fellow board members I decided to add an additional HOB filter to my 20g tank. This is an Aqueon 20gal filter that I had lying around, which usually uses cartridges similar to Whisper. But, I didn't want to buy media for it, so I put in three pot scrubbies in there and am also planning on sticking in filter floss somewhere where it would make sense. Am I good with this setup as my secondary filter or would you advise something else?

Thanks much!

it will work, but scrubbies generally work better when they are not submerged and water is trickling over them, like in a wet/dry. to get even better filtration, you could put some ceramic media in media bag, like in the AquaClear filters...

Ah. I see. I do have some of those bio balls and I was thinking of putting them in but then I remembered about how lots of people use pot scrubbies. I guess I didn't remember the reason behind that. Unfortunately I only have one little baggie of bio balls, fit for an AC50. So, maybe I'll put that in together with a scrubby and filter floss?

plastic bio balls? these also work better in wet/drys where they have water dripping over them resulting in lots of o2. or is it the porous cermaic beads? i also have a dual HOB that i stuffed full of scrubbies on my 210. but this is just extra. my main filtration is an FX5 and a sump.

if youre water quality is good right now, then scrubbies will work fine as additional filtration. but for max effect, get ceramic media

No, these are ceramic; they're the ones that go into the AquaClear filters.

The reasons for the second HOB are:

- It's a long tank, so I put each filter on separate ends
- My water quality is OK, not brilliant, that's why I want more mechanical filtration and to try floss to see if it can become brilliant.
- I want to add some more fish
- I want a backup filter, in case the first one gives out

I stuff my HOB's with as much media it can hold. Some og them have a scrubbie on top of the pile
