I keep seeing these mentioned in regards to wet/dry and sumps. Can I use these in my XP4 canister filter? I have a brand new filter and it came with a small amount of bio chem stars, but not enough to fill the chambers. Can I use pot scrubbies along side the stars? I figure I should be able to find some at a dollar store, wheras the bio chem stars of ceramic rings are pricey.

I just wasn't sure if that was the right tray in the filter to use them.

Howdy,

Those two posts above are complete :bs:

Pot scrubbies have a surface area of 370 sq ft/cubic ft.
Modern biomedia has > 135000 sq ft/cubic ft.

You do the math and decide what's better and where you want to cut corners and go cheap

Damn I never saw anything that had a firm hold on the actual surface area of scrubbies. I doubt they are better than rena's bio stars though.

Thank you very much for clarifying that for me! I will be off to the local dollar store (or loonie store as we call them) today!

You definitely want max surface area in a canister. In a wet/dry you want a non-porous media in a shape that creates turbulence.

Leave the scrubbies to the wet/dry filters.

:iagree: About the only thing that scrubbies are a good substitute for is bio balls in wet/dry applications.

In the beginner filter media sticky has some surface area listings or you could look at this link;

Damn, I just went and bought two packages of scrubbies.:(
Will they work until I can afford the bio stars or ceramic rings?

Well , yes they will work but you will have to phase them out. I would just get some cheap ceramic media if money is an issue. 10 dollars you can get a bag of cascade ceramic media its pretty big
