I just purchased a pack of pot sponges and pot scurbbing pads to use as a replacement for the cartridge filters. However, the problem I have encountered is that there is no real slot for these to slide into. The cartridges that I am attempting to use are from a whisper HOB and pengiuin HOB. What have you all done to modify these cartridges to allow the sponges/pads to work? Use some sort of adhesive (sylicone), buy a different cartridge of similar dimensions that allows you to insert the pads, etc?

Well, scratch the pot sponge. I just did some searching and found that Cellulose pads tend to disinigrate making a MESS in the tank, so these will be returned. However, the scouring pads are still up in the air. Could I just cram these into the slots without the plastic cartridge? I'm not sure if they would stay or not. I guess it's worth a try. I'm thinking that bio max would also be a good bet to place behind the scouring pads?

No.What you want for those types of cartriges is quilt batting. They sell it in huge rolls at the walmart, you can cut it up with scissors to fit your cartrige.

Yea the scouring pads would only be minimally good for bio media or a very course prefilter.

Maybe I could use the scouring pads as a pre-filter and then stuff pot scrubbies in after that? I can get them at the local dollar store 6/$1

What exactly are you calling scouring pads? Is it those green things? They will work just like the quilt batting, but they are much more expensive. A roll of quilt batting will cost you ten dollars at Walmart and will last longer than the HOB filter will.

Secondly, if you have two old cartriges, use the empty shells to hold the quilt batting. Place a layer of batting between the shells and then slide them into the slot.
